Playing cards that have been designed to help people play the game of bingo are known as bingo cards. There are several kinds of bingo cards available on the market. The cards have been designed to enable an enormous number of variants available in the game of bingo. The creation of the first bingo card dates back to the early 1500s. It was used in “Lo Gioco del Lotto d’Italia” which refers to lottery of Italy.

This game was quite similar to modern day lottery, where players place wagers and numbers are drawn. Players with the highest number of matching symbols would win.

Making of bingo cards

Players used paper cards to keep track of the called numbers in the game. A caller was responsible for calling out the numbers. Rubber stamps were largely used to “paint” bingo cards and some of them were hand painted. These methods were used prior to the invention and introduction of printing machines. The beauty of these cards was that they were re-usable. Players used of handmade tokens to cover the called numbers. These cards were shuffled manually to maintain fairness in the game. Today random number generation technologies are used to shuffle the cards online. The handmade cards were more flimsy and the production techniques were not cost effective. Today the printed card industry has the benefit of printing the cards in large numbers, making it more economical.

Different kinds of cards

There are several types of bingo cards that are used by the players. 75 ball bingo game uses a 5×5 grid and 90 ball bingo game uses a 9×3 grid. A 5×5 grid comprises of 5 columns and 5 rows. Each box has a unique number printed on it. The middle box is left blank intentionally. This box is known as “free” space. Each column is named with the letters of the word bingo

  • The First column is named B with numbers ranging from 1 to 15,
  • The Second column is named I with numbers ranging from 16-30,
  • The Third column is named N with numbers ranging from 31-45,
  • The Fourth column is named G with numbers ranging from 46-60 and
  • The last column is named O with numbers ranging from 61-75.

Randomization

It is believed that Edwin S. Lowe, innovator of Bingo, contracted Columbia University professor Carl Leffler for the creation of 6000 exclusive bingo cards. Manual randomization technique is very time-consuming and it is practically impossible to rely on this technique for manufacturing cards. Players have used this technique of randomization for a long time, but present day production techniques are far quicker when compared to the original process.

Earlier, the valuation process of permutations involved the usage of statistics. Factorial calculations were largely used for producing the numbers. For example, the numbers present in column B were assumed to be from the series 1 to 15. Any number from 1 to 15 appears in the first column of the card. Similarly, numbers from 61 to 75 appear in the last column of the card. Each series created a number string that was distinctly different from one another. There was an infinite number of combinations that could be created with these numbers. The point to be understood here is that the cards gave an infinite number of possibilities to the players. There is no scope for duplication of numbers.
